USA Youth Basketball Development Guidelines

USA BASKETBALL YOUTH DEVELOPMENT GUIDELINES

Basketball has become one of the most popular youth sports in the United States. According to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, 9.8 million boys and girls ages 6-17 played basketball in 2015.

Though it has grown in popularity, it’s structure and organization has been slow to follow the pace of its growth. Luckily, USA Basketball and the National Basketball Association (NBA) started an initiative several years ago to improve the structure of the youth basketball scene by developing Youth Development Guidelines that coaches and youth organizations should adhere to in order to provide youth the best opportunity to be successful in the sport.

The guidelines include health and wellness standards as well as gameplay standards to help foster player development in the game. The aim is to combat the overemphasis on early competitive success and the lack of a clear development pathway through the sport – two issues that exist across youth sports, including basketball.

Premier Basketball Club is a proud supporter of the Youth Development Guidelines. It is our goal to do our part in improving the youth basketball community in the states of Colorado and Utah by reinforcing these standards across all of our youth programs.
